What kind of friend are you?
I am a person with lots of friends. I have best friends, I have good friends, I have friends at work, friends at church, friends from college, friends from high school, friends in my sorority, on-line friends and friends of my other friends. I am a friend-aholic. I've noticed over the past couple months that friends I have an abundance of friends, but only a select few that I consider my best friends. People I thought I should label "best" at mediocre that their best. So it made me sit and wonder...damn, what kind of friend am I to people. What do they really think of me? Everyone falls into a certain category of friend.
You have the best friend, who is there through thick and thin, ride or die for you. These are the non-judgmental folks who will cry with you, tell you that you have a booger in your nose, that will tell you "yes girl, you do look fat in that". You can call them at any hour of the night, you tell them your deepest secrets. These people know all about your dirty past and in some cases your dirty present. These are the folks who will put sugar in your man's gas tank. True friends...Total count for me, six. Four girls, two guys. You know who you are, thanks and I love you for life! Do you think I have too many people I consider "best friends"?
Then there are the "all about me friends". Do you have a friend that calls you all the time, never to check on you, but to tell you about their latest news (bad and good). The folks that really could care less about what is going on with you. I have a friend, bless her heart, she will call and say "hey what's up" but before I answer, she has already started telling me her latest issue. Do I look like Dear Abby? Helping my best friends is not an issue, but these "all about me folks" can kiss my...
Don't forget about the "what can you do for me" friends. The ones you trade favors with..I'll do this if you will (fill in the blank) for me. Are these friends or bargain buddies? I call these Swap Meet Acquaintances. I have a fair share of these too.
My favorite type of friend is the "because I have to be". Anyone in a sorority or fraternity know all about these. The chick you really wouldn't give a damn about if it wasn't for the fact that you spent six weeks in a basement together...hhmmmm. Or what about your significant others "best friends"? Luckily my man has some down ass boys, but a couple of them could definitely do without. Yeah I smile and I am nice...but inside I'm like "look at this fool".
My challenge for you, be a good friend to all. You don't have to be the best, but keep in touch, call to say hi, do a good deed for somebody without expecting something in return.
My question for you is this...what kind of friend are you? Is it time for a friend make-over? Tell me about your "types" of friends...I know I left a couple categories out. If you know me on this level, tell me how I'm doing Do I suck too? lol

Wow you had a lot to say about your friends and the type of friends that we all have. So what are friends? Friends to me is someone who I know, like, and trust. I would like to think I’m in the ‘best/listening/cyber friend’ category, but you can tell me what you think of me. The reason I would say I’m in the ‘best friend’ category is just I’m not judgmental, I listen, I give both positive and negative opinions, I’m there for you if you are in trouble, and I can be the same kind of friend for both men and women. Throughout our lives, we meet numerous amounts of people. Some we may see very often and others not so much. Many become our friends and others simply day to day acquaintances. Some types of friends that come to mind to me are:
1. SINCERE/BEST FRIENDS - that real buddy of yours, really close to you
2. LISTENING FRIENDS - hears much and talks little
3. BIG MOUTH FRIENDS - talking all the time, never stop to hear what you've
got to say
4. OCCASIONAL FRIENDS - the one you run into only occasionally (under sad or
happy circumstances)...
5. INTEREST-SEEKING FRIENDS - always asking your for something
6. BROTHER/SISTER-FRIENDS - plays the role of a brother or sister
7. COLLEAGUE FRIENDS - the one you meet at your work or study environment
8. CYBERFRIENDS - the one you get to know on-line
"friends... they cherish one another's hopes.
They are kind to one another's dreams."
~ Henry David Thoreau
I know I was a little long winded LOL!!
I use "radically co-dependents" instead of the term "all about me friends". I have a tendency to attract those types of folks but I'll cut them off without apology. They will suck you dry emotionally if you let them.
For the most part I have only varying degrees of the best friend category. There are my ride-or-die best friends and the people that have the potential to be best friends if given the time. I only like people that I can trust and know have my back when all hell breaks loose. They listen, keep my secrets, tell you the truth no matter how it hurts, and they go out of their way to help you because they know you will do the same. Everyone else is just an acquaintance. I am very careful about the use of the word friend. Some people feel very empowered and entitled if you use that word and I don't want them to get confused.
I'll pass on a saying that I heard from my sister. "Do not make people a priority that only make you an option". Life is too short to be wasting it on people that don't bring anything to your life.
I like that quote "Do not make people a priority that only make you an option". Words to live by. I am in the process of purging friendships based on this thought....
Points well taken mz cane! However, here is something I have learned to live by.
Some people I would prefer to know just from their front door. I really do not want to come in.
Meaning, I really do not want to be anymore then just an aquaintance.
Peace
For every good thing I have to say about one of my friends, I have a bad thing. But if you say something about them I'll cut you deep. (Except 1 or 2 of them. they are open game for talking about.) I have friends that are jealous of me, but always there to listen if I ever need to talk. I have friends that are my dawg when it comes to buggin out, but will dog me if I'm not around. I have friends that have never crossed me and never pissed me off, but are dumber than Ed, Edd, and Eddie. Truth be told, if I had a perfect friend. It would probably wierd me out.
